Wool coating glossary

Use the same words across design, sourcing, Fred Textile’s factory team, garment makers, laboratories, and quality teams—then attach methods, units, tolerances, and samples where a definition alone is not enough.

Fred Textile manufacturing context

Buyer guidance connected to a working production chain.

Fred Textile is a woolen and blended woven fabric manufacturer with published support from fibre preparation through finishing, inspection, and shipment coordination. Fred Textile connects woolen and blended woven fabric development from fibre preparation through top dyeing, spinning, weaving, finishing, inspection, and shipment coordination.

Abrasion resistance

Resistance to surface wear under a stated rubbing method, load, specimen preparation, and endpoint.

Approved standard

The labelled physical sample, colour standard, or digital record formally accepted as the comparison reference for later stages.

Bow

A curved distortion of filling or course lines across the fabric width.

Brushing

A finishing action that lifts fibres to change surface softness, coverage, direction, and appearance.

Bulk

The perceived and measured volume of a fabric relative to its mass; it influences warmth, compression, seams, and silhouette.

Colorfastness

The resistance of colour to an agreed exposure such as rubbing, water, light, perspiration, washing, or dry cleaning.

Conditioning

Bringing specimens to a stated atmosphere before testing so results are comparable.

Crocking

Colour transfer from a fabric surface through rubbing, evaluated dry and/or wet under a stated method.

Double-face cloth

A compound construction with two usable faces, often developed for reversible or self-lined garments.

Drape

How a fabric falls and forms folds under its own weight; it depends on weight, stiffness, thickness, finish, and panel size.

Fulling

Controlled mechanical and moisture treatment that compacts wool fabric and can close the construction and change the surface.

G/M

Grams per linear metre. It depends on fabric width and must not be compared with GSM unless width is included.

GSM

Grams per square metre, an area-based mass measurement used to compare fabric weight.

Handfeel

The tactile impression of a fabric, including softness, smoothness, fullness, dryness, spring, and surface character.

Lab dip

A small colour development submitted for approval before production dyeing.

Linear weight

Mass per unit length, commonly grams per metre; always record the associated total or usable width.

Lot

A traceable quantity produced under linked material and process conditions; the exact definition should be agreed for the order.

Melton

A dense, compact overcoating direction whose finishing can substantially obscure the underlying weave.

MOQ

Minimum order quantity, which may apply by article, colour, finish, or total order and may change with custom requirements.

Nap

A directional raised surface that can change shade and appearance when viewed or cut in different directions.

Pilling

Formation of fibre pills on a surface through wear; results depend on fibre, yarn, construction, finish, method, and grading.

Raising

A finishing process that pulls fibre ends toward the surface to create cover, softness, or a hairy appearance.

Recovery

The ability to return toward the original shape after extension, compression, bending, or garment wear.

Retained sample

A labelled approved sample kept by relevant parties for comparison with future samples, bulk lots, claims, and repeats.

Seam slippage

Movement of yarns away from a seam under force; method, seam construction, direction, and endpoint must be stated.

Shade grouping

Separating rolls into visually and instrumentally compatible colour groups for cutting and garment assembly.

Skew

An angular distortion of filling or course lines relative to the fabric edges.

Tear strength

The force required to propagate a tear under a named method and specimen direction.

Tensile strength

Resistance to being pulled apart under a named strip or grab method, direction, and conditions.

Usable width

The portion of fabric width that can be cut after excluding selvedges or unacceptable edge areas.

Wool coating

An outerwear fabric category designed to provide combinations of warmth, body, surface, drape, and durability for coats and jackets.

Woolen-spun

A yarn route generally associated with a bulkier, more fibrous structure than a combed worsted route; actual fabric behaviour still depends on construction and finish.

Worsted-spun

A combed yarn route that aligns longer fibres and often produces a clearer, smoother structure than woolen-spun yarn.
