Double-Face Wool Hand-Seams Open: What to Check

An opening hand-sewn edge can involve stitching or separation of the fabric structure. Preserve both faces and the joining area rather than pulling the layers apart to inspect them.

Fabric inspection at Fred Textile

Separate the causes

Stitch pickup failure

Check whether stitches securely engage the intended folded layers and whether thread remains intact.

Split-depth variation

Compare separation depth along the failed edge with the approved hand-sewn sample.

Fabric binding concern

Inspect whether separation propagates beyond the prepared seam zone; review the construction with the mill.

Steps before deciding

  1. Label the failed edge, lot and exact garment location.
  2. Retain an intact edge made by the same operation.
  3. Record split preparation, folded widths and stitch sequence.
  4. Trial the actual assembly under agreed opening loads.
  5. Check both edge appearance and integrity after care.

Worked example

Hypothetical example: thread remains intact but one folded layer pulls free while the fabric binding elsewhere is sound. Investigate stitch pickup before treating this as general double-cloth delamination.

Buyer questions

Can I use deeper stitches?

Trial visibility and integrity together; deeper pickup may show on the face.

Is flat fabric strength enough?

It does not reproduce the split and folded hand-seam.
