Wool Coat Back Vents Kick Out: Checks

A vent that kicks outward may be restrained at its lining connection or built with unequal overlapping layers. Inspect it before pressing it flat again.

Fabric inspection at Fred Textile

Separate the causes

Unequal overlap

Check underlap and overlap seam lines against the approved pattern, including hem turns.

Lining restraint

Map lining attachments near the vent top and bottom; look for a connection pulling one layer.

Local pressing distortion

Compare the vent before and after pressing on the same support and after full cooling.

Steps before deciding

  1. Photograph the vent naturally hanging and during movement.
  2. Measure each overlap layer without pulling it flat.
  3. Record vent reinforcement and lining connections.
  4. Trial the suspected construction change on one sample.
  5. Approve overlap coverage and movement after care.

Worked example

Hypothetical case: the vent lies correctly until the lining is connected at the bottom. A lining-connection trial should precede any new coating purchase.

Buyer questions

Should the vent be sewn closed?

That changes the garment function; it is a design decision, not a diagnosis.

Can extra weight hold it down?

It may mask the symptom without removing restraint or distortion.
