Canvas Outlines Show Through Wool Coating

A visible support outline is not always transparency. Compare the area under transmitted light and under side lighting to distinguish colour show-through from a raised impression.

Fabric inspection at Fred Textile

Separate the causes

Colour contrast

Compare the proposed support behind the same shell without sewing or pressing.

Edge impression

Locate the visible line relative to canvas edges and joins; inspect thickness steps.

Process effect

Compare unpressed and cooled pressed assemblies with identical layers.

Steps before deciding

  1. Record shell colour, thickness and support colour.
  2. Photograph under the buyer’s agreed viewing light.
  3. Map support edges and joins onto the affected panel.
  4. Trial compatible support colour or edge construction separately.
  5. Confirm drape and appearance after the intended care process.

Worked example

Hypothetical example: a line appears under side light but disappears in transmitted-light comparison. Investigate the layer edge rather than labelling the coating see-through.

Buyer questions

Will a darker support help?

Only if colour contrast is the cause; it may worsen other combinations.

Is an opacity test enough?

It will not settle a raised edge-impression problem.
