Wool Coating Passes Abrasion but Loses Its Nap

A reported abrasion pass does not automatically approve how a raised wool coating looks afterwards. First identify what the report actually assessed: specimen breakdown, mass change, appearance or another agreed endpoint. If the nap becomes flat or shiny, preserve the unbrushed test pieces and compare them with the starting reference. Fabric remaining intact and the buyer accepting its appearance are separate decisions.

Separate the causes

No holes, but the surface is flat

Confirm the reported endpoint and the separately agreed appearance requirement. A breakdown result cannot stand in for an appearance assessment. Ask the laboratory which method and evaluation basis apply to this fabric; do not assume a method from a trade name or a cycle count alone.

The sample looks better after brushing

Record the before-brushing state and any preparation or recovery specified in the agreed protocol. Keep the original evidence. Brushing, shaving or steaming a specimen outside the method cannot silently turn an unacceptable surface into a passing laboratory result.

Only a collar or bag-contact area changes in wear

Record the actual contact, care and construction history before comparing it with a laboratory test. Local wear may involve different conditions; a photograph or surviving lab specimen does not identify one cause or guarantee the coat's service life.

Steps before deciding

  1. Identify article, shade/lot, finish, face, nap direction, specimen stage and any pretreatment. Retain an untouched starting reference.
  2. Read the full report: method and part, load/contact material, agreed intervals, endpoint, individual observations and deviations. Missing test details require clarification, not conversion into an assumed rating.
  3. Agree appearance conditions and acceptance before evaluation. Photograph identified specimens at planned stages under the same light and orientation; keep flattened nap, pills, shedding and colour change as separate observations.
  4. If a revised finish or construction is proposed, trial it in limited material. Check appearance together with hand, colour and dimensions; a harder or less raised surface may change the intended coat.
  5. Approve the selected material and garment-contact trial against the written brief, retaining the agreed appearance reference and inspection scope for bulk. Do not replace an open visual requirement with a higher cycle number.

Worked example

Hypothetical comparison: candidates A and B both meet the specified breakdown requirement. A nevertheless misses the separately agreed surface reference after the agreed evaluation, while B remains acceptable. The buyer records both outcomes rather than calling them equally durable from the breakdown pass. If no appearance basis was agreed, it must be defined transparently before a new comparison, not invented as an alleged existing limit.

Buyer questions

Can abrasion cycles be converted to months of wear?

No direct conversion is supplied here. Real contact, construction and care vary, and different report endpoints must not be treated as the same result.

Is flat nap the same as pilling?

No. Record flattening, attached pills, loose fibre transfer and colour change separately. They may coexist, but a single label or photograph is not a complete evaluation.
