Separate the causes
Internal droplets
Record where droplets appear, temperature changes known from handling, and whether the core or cloth is also wet.
External water entry
Inspect wrap punctures, seals and wet carton areas; preserve the unopened package photographs.
Cloth condition
Assess staining, odour and visible growth separately. Suspect contamination needs qualified review, not cosmetic brushing.
Steps before deciding
- Quarantine affected rolls from acceptable stock.
- Record receipt conditions and package identity.
- Agree safe opening and drying assessment with the responsible team.
- Retain evidence without sealing wet samples indefinitely.
- Obtain a documented condition and release decision.
Worked example
Hypothetical example: droplets are present but their origin is unknown. A receipt report should say observed internal moisture, not assert a leaking container without evidence.
Buyer questions
Can I just air the rolls and use them?
Dry appearance alone does not establish acceptable cloth condition.
Does a smell prove mould?
No. Qualified assessment is needed for a specific diagnosis.
