Separate the causes
Package movement
Record displacement at both roll ends and inspect wrapping and restraint.
Edge compression
Check whether the projecting edge has been crushed, rubbed or contaminated.
Unwound geometry
Compare relaxed width and grain after safe unwinding; roll-end shape alone cannot establish fabric skew.
Steps before deciding
- Keep end photographs with a scale.
- Identify the roll, transport package and receipt date.
- Agree supported handling of the unstable roll.
- Map affected edge metres during inspection.
- Approve any rerolling plan without erasing the original evidence.
Worked example
Hypothetical case: the roll projects 4 cm at one end, but relaxed cloth width and grain remain acceptable. Packaging movement and a fabric skew claim need separate conclusions.
Buyer questions
Can I push the layers back?
Do not apply an unapproved force that may worsen folds or edge damage.
Is roll telescoping a length shortage?
Not by itself. Length must be measured separately under the agreed method.
