Separate the causes
Physical join
Record whether the roll contains separate lengths, a seam or another connection; do not assume all joins are equivalent.
Documentation mismatch
Compare the packing list, join allowance and roll label with the actual position found.
Cutting consequence
Check marker lengths and required continuous panels; total metres alone do not establish usable yield.
Steps before deciding
- Stop the affected lay before cutting across the join.
- Record the join’s measured position and the roll identity.
- Inspect both sides for shade and face continuity.
- Calculate affected markers separately from total length.
- Agree disposition and future join-marking requirements.
Worked example
Hypothetical example: a 50 m roll includes a join at 18 m, and the marker needs 20 m uninterrupted. The total length can be correct while the first planned lay is impossible.
Buyer questions
Is every join a defect?
Use the agreed order terms; some programmes permit declared joins.
Can I deduct an entire roll?
Document actual unusable yield and the contractual basis before deciding.
